Elevate Your Passion for Flight

The Bates Field Aero Club was founded in 1968 by Gene A. Turnmire and Harold E. Ley. It was originally formed as a club for military personnel only, but in 1970 was changed to allow civilians to join.

By 1971 it was no longer associated with the military and was open to anyone interested in general aviation. It was first located on the west ramp of Bates Field Airport.

On September 30, 1971, Gene A. Turnmire and Donald W. Howell (Past Secretary-Treasurer) finally got the Club Incorporated by the State of Alabama as a Non-Profit Corporation in the name of BATES FIELD AERO CLUB, INC. Its primary purpose is to promote general aviation.
